What to know

This is the number that catches people out. The MESA V3 manual says to discontinue use of the child restraint after 10 years from the date of manufacture or after a crash, where the MESA V2 and MESA MAX manuals both say 7. Do not carry one MESA generation's lifespan across to another: refer to the labels on the bottom of the carrier and the base, which is where UPPAbaby prints the manufactured and expiration dates. The manual also states the child restraint is certified for aircraft use, and infant carriers fly without their base.

The date of manufacture is on the seat itself. The expiration date and date of manufacture are printed on labels on the bottom of the seat shell and on the car seat base. The serial number needed for registration and support is on the same label.

Safety note: SeatCheck summarizes manufacturer and NHTSA guidance, but the label on your own seat and its manual are the final word. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer with your model and serial number.
