Nuna's expiration policy

Nuna sets lifespan by seat type. PIPA series infant seats (PIPA, PIPA rx, PIPA aire, PIPA lite, PIPA urbn) expire 7 years after the date of manufacture. Everything larger runs on a single 10-year rule that Nuna repeats in manual after manual: do not use the child restraint if it is more than 10 years old. That covers the RAVA and RAVA next convertibles, the EXEC and EXEC next all-in-ones, the REVV and REVV maxx rotating seats, the LUMN harness-to-booster, and the AACE belt-positioning booster.

Nuna stamps a do-not-use-after date on the seat, so you do not have to calculate anything. The EXEC manual directs you to check the label or the stamped date on the bottom of the child restraint, and the same labeling approach applies across the lineup, including the bases.

Because the PIPA's 7-year window is shorter than the 10 years common on convertibles, a PIPA handed down through two or three children can age out sooner than parents expect. Check the stamped date before reusing one.

Where is the expiration label on a Nuna seat?

The model number, date of manufacture, and stamped do-not-use-after date are on a label on the bottom of the child restraint (and on the underside of the base for seats sold with one). Nuna also prints this information on the registration card packed with the seat.

After a crash

Nuna's US manuals reproduce the NHTSA criteria: never use a seat that has been in a moderate or severe crash, while a seat may continue in use after a minor crash only if the vehicle drove away, the door nearest the seat was undamaged, no one was injured, no airbags deployed, and the seat has no visible damage. Nuna also says to stop using a seat with frayed straps or damage from any crash and to call 1-855-NUNA-USA with questions.

Flying with a Nuna seat

Nuna's PIPA series infant seats are tested and certified to meet FAA requirements (the PIPA urbn is certified for aircraft even though it installs baseless). The EXEC, EXEC next and LUMN are certified for aircraft when used with the five-point harness but not in booster mode, since aircraft have lap belts only. Three seats are not certified for aircraft at all: the REVV and REVV maxx manuals say aircraft belts will not accommodate proper installation, and the AACE booster manual says the same. Check the label on your seat for the aircraft certification statement before you pack it.

Nuna calculates expiration from the date of manufacture, not purchase, and stamps the final date on the shell, which makes secondhand verification straightforward.

Register the seat at nunababy.com; the model number, serial number, and manufacture date on the bottom label are required, and registration gets you recall and safety alerts.

Safety note: SeatCheck summarizes manufacturer and NHTSA guidance, but the label on your own seat and its manual are the final word. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer with your model and serial number.

Frequently asked questions

How long are Nuna car seats good for?
Nuna PIPA infant seats last 7 years from the date of manufacture. Everything bigger lasts 10 years, including the RAVA and RAVA next, the EXEC and EXEC next, the REVV and REVV maxx, the LUMN and the AACE booster. Nuna stamps a do-not-use-after date on the bottom of every seat, so flip the seat over and read the exact date rather than estimating.
When does the Nuna PIPA expire?
Every seat in the PIPA series, including the PIPA rx, aire, lite, and urbn, expires 7 years after its date of manufacture. The stamped expiration date is on the label on the bottom of the carrier and on the base. After that date, Nuna says the seat should not be used.
Does Nuna require replacing the seat after every crash?
No. Nuna's manuals follow the NHTSA rule: mandatory replacement after a moderate or severe crash, while reuse after a minor crash is allowed only if all five NHTSA conditions are met, including no injuries, no airbag deployment, and no visible seat damage. Call Nuna at 1-855-NUNA-USA if you are unsure.
Are Nuna car seats FAA approved?
The PIPA series is certified to meet FAA requirements, and PIPA carriers install on aircraft without the base. The EXEC is aircraft certified in harness mode only; its booster mode is not certified because airplane seats have lap belts. Look for the aircraft certification wording on your seat's label.

Replacing an expired seat?

If your Nuna seat is past its date, a current-generation replacement is safer and often easier to install.
